The Hilton has seen a lot of history: in the 1940s, it served as an army barracks and in 1968 the police tossed Democratic National Convention rioters through the plate-glass windows. You'd hardly suspect the stories from the crystal-dripping, gilt-grandeur of this South Loop giant.

When it was built in 1927, the Chicago Hilton was the largest hotel in the world, with close to 3000 rooms (and a hospital and a theatre), Renovations have brought the total down to 1544, and some of the resulting standard rooms now have two bathrooms. Rooms are comfy, if institutionally furnished; many have good views out over Grant Park and Lake Michigan. (The TV show ER often films helicopter landing scenes on the roof.) It's worthwhile to note that rooms with two double beds tend to be larger than rooms with a king bed, though the price remains the same. The Hilton houses three restaurant/bar venues, which you'll be seeking out in the evening because the local South Loop neighborhood is a party pooper for entertainment. Be prepared for conventioneers who often swoop in and overrun the place. One bone of contention: the fitness center costs 15.00 per day to use.
