The Comfort Inn tries hard to look classy while staying moderate in price. Its location - a five-minute walk west of Michigan Ave and the Magnificent Mile - and free amenities deserve greater praise.

Can a hotel be schizophrenic? It would explain the convergence of an art deco-style 1920s building, a Tudoresque dark-wood lobby and the contemporary dusty blue-and-beige guest rooms. Never mind, this Comfort Inn is still a notch above the standard chain motel. Each room has free wi-fi, a coffeemaker and CD player. The queen rooms are small; a king or double gets you noticeably more space with a fridge and microwave, though you'll pay for it (30.00 and up). Unfortunately, views are nonexistent since taller buildings surround the property; this also makes rooms dark. The price includes a free continental breakfast, plus use of the small fitness room with whirlpool and sauna. The liquor store next door is a little unsavory, but at least the flop house above it is being renovated.
