The designers of the Standard Hotels in Downtown LA and West Hollywood have refashioned this once dowdy tower in their own image. Industrial-chic rooms and public spaces attract entertainment industry guests, and the poolside bar (called Hopscotch) looks like it could house a fashion shoot (and often does). The charcoal black exterior is your first clue that something's different, and its hidden entrance (around the back) is your second. The fun continues inside, with exposed concrete brick, hard woods and barely a single curve in the lobby. Staff will serve you espresso from a machine mounted in the wall while you're checking in. Inside the rooms (with views of the runways, ocean or city), walls are lined with sheer white curtains and beds seem to float in the middle of the floor on their own islands. Techie features include free wi-fi and dock for your iPod. Even the in-room honor bar has a sense of fun, with playing cards, paddleball and rubber-band airplanes for sale. The Bistrotek restaurant serves organic comfort food.

Apart from a small shopping strip in the Playa del Rey neighborhood, there's not much to do in the immediate vicinity, but you're about seven minutes' drive from the seaside party that is Venice Beach. Watch the bronzed, the buff, the bikers and bladers for an only-in-LA scene.
The building was designed by Welton Becket, whose best known work is the iconic Capitol Records building in Hollywood.
