This boutique hotel, housed in the former villa of silent movie star Lillian Gish, offers a sleek and soulful Parisian boudoir atmosphere. The look is French kiss meets the Far East - and it's love at first sight.
Designers have created fantasy settings for the three dozen or so lushly styled rooms, each slightly different in size, configuration and color scheme, alongside eclectic artwork and vintage furnishings. The bijou rooms are smallish, but enjoy high-speed internet and a full-service concierge. Look for specials on the website including parking, breakfast and more. The intimate downstairs cocktail lounge, Bar Noir, fairly hums after dark. Guests can drive over to the fabulously mid-20th-century modern Avalon Hotel, another member of the chic Kor Hotel Group (which also runs the Santa Monica's Viceroy and the Chamberlain West Hollywood), to take a dip in the hourglass-shaped pool where Marilyn Monroe once swam.

Zoom east down Wilshire Blvd into the heart of Beverly Hills' Golden Triangle shopping district. Rodeo Drive is where Prada, Gucci, Armani and Valentino trot out their glamorous fashions in sleek emporiums staffed by hotties as svelte as gazelles. It's pricey, pretentious and yet, somehow, oddly irresistible.

Curious fact

Lillian Gish (1893-1993) was one of the most noted actresses of the silent era and beyond. Her breakout performance was in The Birth of a Nation (1915), Hollywood's first blockbuster and controversial for its glorification of the Ku Klux Klan.
