This venerable 1924 property hosted many classic stars - Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, John Wayne and the Munchkins from The Wizard of Oz among them - while they were shooting films at nearby studios. A gracious lobby gives way to comfortable, if not luxurious, rooms furnished with antiques and marble bathrooms.

Today this heritage hotel is a value-conscious spot in quaint downtown Culver City. Each room is named after a different star, and some boast collectible memorabilia inside. While not exciting, they're definitely adequate accommodations for these rates. The special-occasion John Wayne suite has double bathrooms and a Jacuzzi tub. The on-site restaurant serves global cuisine and has amiable tables that spill out onto the sidewalk. The hotel sits at the heart of pedestrian-friendly Culver City, a doable drive inland from Venice Beach, with easy connections to freeways for points beyond. The neighborhood has some of LA's top restaurants, art galleries and entertainment venues, including the famous Jazz Bakery. If you're looking for a laid-back, local experience of life in LA, this hotel is a good place to start.
