This quiet, immaculate 77-room boutique hotel beautifully blends Craftsman and Asian aesthetics. Trim and tidy rooms have high ceilings and dark-wood furniture, and some even have fireplaces and balconies with teak furniture. When you're ready to leave, a London taxi can shuttle you around Santa Monica.

The Ambrose is an unlikely spot, off a busy commercial strip and near executive offices of music and TV companies, yet in a largely residential area about 20 blocks from the beach in Santa Monica. Rates include access to a small exercise gym and a gourmet continental breakfast supplied by a local chef. Gorgeous places to lounge about include the library with its fireplace and the tranquil garden with a koi pond. Aveda bath amenities will help you unwind, as will top-notch bed and bath linens. Each room also sports high-tech devices, including multiple phone lines, a CD/DVD player with surround sound and nearly a hundred cable channels on the TV. There's free high-speed internet access throughout the hotel and most in-room safes will hold laptops. Inadequate soundproofing is a problem, though; ground-floor rooms tend to be the noisiest and least lovely.
