Magically converted from the 1955 Superior Oil headquarters, this minimalist hotel goes after the same young, hip and shag-happy crowd as its older Sunset Strip sister. Rooms are graded from 'Cheap' to 'Wow!' The rooftop pool bar has one of the city's hottest pick-up scenes.Leave the kids at home when booking yourself into one of these design-savvy rooms with platform beds, glass-walled showers that open onto the bedroom, happy mini-bars and little else in the way of furniture. If you're a creative type who's hip to the downtown LA arts scene, you'll love every whimsical touch, from the nonsensical building directory at the entrance to the antique organ by the front desk. Staff will more than likely leave you alone here, which is a plus for some, but a negative if you're a high-maintenance traveler. The outdoor rooftop lounge, swimming in a sea of skyscrapers, is libidinous, intense and more than a bit surreal. There are stainless-steel chaise longues, hot-bod servers and a pool for cooling off if it gets too steamy. Expect a velvet rope on weekends, but almost no crowd during the daytime. The 24-hour coffee shop is equally sceney.

Who says Angelenos don't read? Heead to LA's Central Library, a 1926 beaux-arts triumph by architect Bertram Goodhue that incorporates Egyptian and classical motifs. On-site art and photography galleries are home to fascinating exhibits. Café Pinot, run by star chef Joachim Splichal, serves sophisticated contemporary fare amidst the library's Maguire Gardens. Reservations are recommended.
