This 1923 landmark exudes the grandeur of a European palace and has hosted a galaxy of presidents, celebrities and royalty. Rooms, sheathed in soothing gold and ivory hues, feature all the trappings, although some are small-ish, reflecting the tastes of the time.If you're on a business trip and are looking for a well-established hotel with character, the Biltmore, in the heart of Downtown's business and commercial district, won't disappoint. The lobby ushers you in with soaring columns and hand-painted frescoes, while the old-world rooms with marble bathrooms are stately, if a bit long in the tooth and subject to street noise. The music suite even has its own grand piano. The Art Deco health club and indoor pool are so classic that they take the work out of workout. The Biltmore's right across from Pershing Square, scene of all kinds of civic events from concerts to an outdoor ice rink for the Downtown office crowd (though it's a little gritty at night). Among the Biltmore's selection of restaurants, SaiSai serves fabulously innovative Japanese cuisine.

In addition to being well situated for business, a stay here places you at the center of LA's cultural district. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Central Library are all within a few blocks, and a little farther on are Chinatown, Little Tokyo and LA's birthplace, Olvera St.
The signature drink at the Biltmore's famed Gallery Bar is the Black Dahlia, named for an infamous 1947 murder victim - aspiring actress Elizabeth Short, last spotted alive at this hotel. Her death remains a mystery to this day.
