A favorite hideaway of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, this 1933 Art-Deco hotel near Santa Monica Pier sure has character. Renovated rooms have attractive amenities, like Nintendo systems, wi-fi internet, cozy bathrobes and Aveda bath products. From the moment you walk in, the Georgian Hotel's sense of history envelops you. Rotary phones sit on tables in the lobby, and there are feather comforters and claw-foot tubs in the 84 guest rooms and suites. Take breakfast in the hotel's Veranda restaurant (located...guess where). Try the French toast soufflé or lounge in the former speakeasy where gangster Bugsy Siegel once imbibed. While the hotel isn't right on the beach, you'll pay less than at oceanfront properties like Casa del Mar or Shutters on the Beach. As is typical of many historic hotels, standard rooms are excruciatingly small, although a handful of complimentary extras - including newspapers, a small work-out room and a business center - begin to compensate, as does the incredibly convenient location.

Walk under the neon-lit arch of the Santa Monica Pier, the oldest seaside amusement park in California (since 1908). While away a few hours in the ocean breeze, riding the solar-powered Ferris wheel or the 1920s carousel featured in the movie The Sting. Beneath the pier is the tiny Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, where kids get introduced to a rainbow variety of sea critters.
