With only 40 rooms, this delightful find is at once both homey and spare, with sisal rugs (some of which need to be replaced) and bamboo lamps, plus black-and-white photos on the walls and piles of white bedding. It may not live up to its billing, but it's a good choice. The Greenview is a fine choice for relatively inexpensive accommodations. With hardwood floors to mod (if not new) furnishings, the rooms are a tad on the cool side, but they're also clean and large enough. The linens, both bed and bath, are surprisingly nice for these prices. The bathroom sink and TV are smallish, but they're perfectly acceptable. A continental breakfast is included, as is free internet and the use of the pool at its sister hotel, the Albion. Add friendly staff to the mix and you've got a bargain.

More so than many American cities, Miami's outer layer can be tough to penetrate - its fascinating pockets are spread out and their shiny surfaces can be intimidating. But that's where a good tour guide comes in very handy indeed. Contact the lively historian Dr Paul George (www.hmsf.org) for very popular tours between September and late June.
