If you're looking for a little shut-eye between rolling home at dawn and rocking out for an early afternoon breakfast, this may well be your spot. It's cheap, it's across from the beach and it's close enough to walk to boutiques and clubs.Beyond that, it's a bit of a gamble. Musty odors aren't uncommon in the cheaper Deco armada; the staff just has to be extra assiduous when it comes to cleaning the rooms and maintaining the facilities. But that doesn't happen often enough here, even for budget accommodations. Separately, peeling paint, mildew-challenged bathrooms, sandpapery bath towels, sadistic air-conditioning (or lack thereof) and a cantankerous elevator might be surmountable to non-fussy travelers. Only you can decide. To be balanced, conditions don't always converge into a perfect storm of untenable conditions. Rooms can be clean, the swimming pool can be inviting and the carpeting can be clean enough to walk on in bare feet. Once the housekeeping gains a little more consistency and the San Juan invests in fixing - not just patching - its facilities, it'll be an okay place to stay.

Mail a postcard from the 1937 US Post Office (1300 Washington Ave), a Deco gem, the very first South Beach renovation project tackled by preservationists in the '70s. This Depression moderne building in the 'stripped classic' style was built under President Franklin D Roosevelt's reign with Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds, supporting artists who were out of work during the Great Depression.
