This 1937 Art Deco classic, designed by deco master Henry Hohauser, is a legendary SoBe (South Beach) hot spot; its heated pool is fabulous (if small) and it has a lovely rooftop deck. The 127 rooms and bathrooms are small but first-rate.

Almost in SoFi (south of Fifth St), the Park Central is a great all-around choice that gets plenty of rave traveler reviews. The pleasant staff is accommodating without being haughty; the vibe is cool without being icy. Many oh-so-tasteful rooms have ocean views; all enjoy custom furnishings. Suites are sumptuously simple, awash in a muted palette, and quite a cut above standard rooms. The Vampire Lestat Room (number 419), described in Anne Rice's Tale of the Body Thief as the one the vampire stayed in, is heavily booked though no more expensive than similar rooms. To reach the roof, walk past reception, take the elevator to the top floor and walk out to the right. Go around 16:00, when cruise ships chug down Government Cut, or on any weekend night for a great view of the Drive's action. Amenities include free wi-fi.
