The name alone resonates of another era. Artful renovations infuse classic Art Deco architecture with an aura of Casablanca-meets-the- voyage-of-the-Queen Mary. For a luxurious, if surreal stay - after all, you are in the heart of South Beach - this is the place to land.

They lay the retro-punk on thick in the Astor lobby, glamorizing and exaggerating the Age of Transportation into a hip caricature of itself: a gigantic industrial fan blows over a ceiling studded with psychedelic 'lamp balls,' all suspended over a fanciful daydream of an old school pilot's club. The earth-toned rooms are relaxing, but good luck chilling: the small pool gets covered at night to make room for clubgoers who bop on the back-patio lounge. There's also a strong whiff of nautical influence (faux porthole windows); the front desk might not bat an eyelash if you ask for a 'port out starboard home' stateroom. You're never a stratosphere away from the staff - at your beck and call with 24-hour room service to satisfy late-night cravings.
