Part hotel, part apartment building, the 25-room, family-owned Halcyon has small rooms and a few snappy-looking mismatched antiques. The color scheme is warm and inviting, and best of all it's a quiet place to sleep. Rates here are a bargain in pricey San Francisco.

There's no uniformity, but expect details like Craftsman-style fold-down oak dining tables and framed, beveled mirrors. All rooms come with mini-kitchenettes, but they're oddly placed in the walk-in closet of some rooms. Still, they're useful and appliances are brand new. Family rooms have a single bunk with a double bed below. We especially like the mix of old and new, such as claw-foot tubs, and fresh looking drapes and bedspreads - the owners are constantly making upgrades. Service is friendly and the rates are great, they even accept pets (with a deposit).
