Deep in the down-and-out Tenderloin, the Bijou stands in disregard of its gritty surroundings, a safe haven for midrange travelers looking for a bit of style on the cheap. Rooms are decorated with a nod to the movies, and there are even nightly screenings of films shot in San Francisco.

The lobby is decorated to look like the lobby of a movie theater, and the front desk doubles as a candy counter so you'll have something to munch on during screenings. The movie room lies beyond red velvet curtains and has two rows of antique movie-house seats, a cool detail. Upstairs, some rooms (and bathrooms) are on the small side. Beds have gaudy space-age patterned bedspreads of pink, green and purple. The mattresses are comfortable enough, though the linens and pillows are nothing special. If you're a get-up-and-go traveler the Bijou is centrally located, despite the not-so-nice neighborhood (think cops and robbers, hookers and johns). The big drawback is noise: the rear-facing high-floor rooms are the quietest.
