A tourist-class hotel with stylish details, the Mosser has tiny rooms and tinier baths, but rates are a bargain. If only the service were better.

Most rooms are the size of closets, but have surprisingly comfortable platform beds with stainless-steel reading lamps, faux-leather headboards, deep-brown comforters and suede throw pillows. There's even a bathrobe hanging in the closet. The building is definitely old, evident in the windows, insulation, soundproofing, exposed ceiling pipes in the hallways, and itty-bitty bathrooms. When the owners revamped the old Victorian Hotel, they changed all the furniture and upgraded the fixtures, but they didn't gut the building. No matter - this isn't supposed to be a fancy boutique hotel. It's a gussied-up tourist-class property, and a good bargain in expensive San Francisco. We have reservations about the sometimes-bumbling service, but you get what you pay for. The hotel's brochure reads 'affordable luxury'. It should really say 'inexpensive style'.
