Built in 1902, the oh-so-civilized Hotel Majestic holds a torch for traditional elegance. The lobby is decked out with crystal chandeliers and potted palms, and every room has sculpted pastel carpets and chintz draperies. Yes, it's old-school and a bit worn at the edges, but for the genre, it's done really well.

Everywhere you look in the lobby there's lavish ornamentation: fringed lampshades, fancy wrought-iron railings, plush floral-print carpet. Even the elevators have delicate, vaguely Oriental, hand-painted murals. Guestrooms are less ornate, conservatively done in sage green and dusty rose, with Chinese porcelain lamps beside the beds. We appreciate the triple-sheeting and availability of both foam and feather pillows. Bathrooms have gilt-framed mirrors and retro-fancy brass light fixtures topped with little lampshades. The latter look smart, but they're way too dim if your eyesight is failing and you're trying to nail a close shave. Standard rooms are small and have antique wooden armoires instead of closets. For more space, book a junior suite; many have gas fireplaces, canopy beds and carved wooden furniture.
