Facing the western edge of Golden Gate Park, the Stanyan Park Hotel occupies a stately Victorian building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The rooms are completely up-to-date, with nary a drafty window or creaky floor.

The place looks spiffy from the outside, with Victorian-style dentil moldings and a windowed turret standing sentinel at the building's corner. It's hard to beat such a dramatic exterior, and the owners clearly decided to play it safe with traditional American furniture - Queen Anne and Chippendale-style chairs, floral-print wallpaper and dusty-green and pale-pink color schemes. There's nothing risky about it, but that's also its charm: soothing familiarity and timelessness. Bathrooms are plain, but have pretty, striped wallpaper and floor-to-ceiling tiles instead of cheap fiberglass in their tub-shower combinations - a nice touch. Lighter rooms face busy Stanyan St, and the occasional loud drunk wanders past with a shopping cart in tow, but the neighborhood is safe. You can also walk to Haight-Ashbury or the museums in Golden Gate Park. There's also a bike rental shop downstairs.
