A brick wall runs the length of the lobby at this understated five-story boutique hotel, once a boarding house for sailors. Since it's right at the edge of San Francisco bay, the water views from some rooms are mesmerizing.

Most rooms have an exposed, 100-year-old brick wall, which adds rich texture and color to the monochromatic brown, gold and beige palette. Mahogany headboards and bedside tables lend an understated elegance. The art is somewhat predictable, but rooms look smart and crisp, with the sole exception of the marble vanity and sink in the corner. This bothers a lot of people, who justifiably believe that a sink belongs in the bathroom - especially at these rates. But the beds are deliciously comfortable (request feather pillows), service friendly, and the location ideal for exploring downtown. It's worth the extra for a room looking out at the Bay Bridge, which is stunning at night. You can buy a day pass to the adjacent YMCA, which has an excellent gym and large swimming pool.
