At the edge of the downtown waterfront overlooking San Francisco Bay, the Harbor Court exudes a certain chic, with a burnt-orange, brick-red and royal-purple color palette in the lounge-like lobby. Rooms are small - sometimes tiny - but make maximum use of space.

Every warm, inviting room sports a handsome variety of textures, including rich purple-and-gold patterned carpet and brightly colored Thai-silk pillows. Some deluxe rooms have a wall of mirrors, a sexy detail that helps the rooms look bigger. Built-in bedside tables, suspended above the floor, create extra space, as do wall-mounted flat-screen TVs; but note that pull-out drawers under the high platform beds replace closets, and your suitcase may not fit into the armoire. Aside from the silvery-blue polka-dotted wallpaper, bathrooms are generic, with white tiles and average-Joe fixtures, but aromatherapy soaps and massaging shower heads make up the difference. If you're feeling flush, ask for a bay view; the glittering lights of the Bay Bridge are gorgeous at night. For a small fee the adjacent YMCA has an excellent gym and swimming pool.
