You get more bang for your buck at the Laurel Inn than at most downtown hotels. Rooms are bigger than average and have a colorful, up-to-date look; many have full kitchens. The trade-off? You'll have to take a bus or taxi to reach most tourist destinations. From the outside it's just another vintage-1960s motor lodge, but the interior has been completely restyled. Rooms are done in warm earth tones with splashes of bright blue and orange to spice up the visual. Amenities are basic: foam pillows, nothing-special linens, fluorescent bathroom lighting. Every room is the same size, but has different features; some have only showers, no tubs. It's worth the little bit extra for a kitchen and view - what you save on restaurants makes up the difference, and the cityscape panoramas are stupendous. Downtown's towers lie 3mi away, and parade across the horizon like a platoon of giant soldiers. The hotel sits at the intersection of four neighborhoods: Western Addition, Pacific Heights, Presidio Heights and Laurel Heights (a fact few locals know). If you like to walk, allow 20-30min to get anywhere noteworthy.

Across the street, Ella's Restaurant serves San Francisco's best breakfast. Everything is made from scratch - breads, pastries, sourdough pancakes - and there are no tourists. Great lunches, too. Expect weekend waits. If you've booked a room with a kitchen, shop west up California St in Laurel Village; Bryan's Quality Meats is among SF's top butchers and has a terrific selection of ready-to-eat meals.
