As soon as you set foot in centrally located Alka's lobby, you'll feel a world away from the hullabaloo outside - it's just a pity that a welcoming smile seems to be somewhat of an alien concept to the front desk folk.

Although Alka's standard rooms are somewhat space-deprived and very much on the dull side, they're in good condition, with many decorated in soporific tones of hazelnut and claret. Some rooms are even fitted out with smart wood-panelled walls, while all rooms come with a bathtub and many with laminate wooden flooring. Those choosing one of the more expensive rooms can look forward to a higher degree of luxury - including a window, which standard rooms lamentably lack. Alka has long been loved for its pure vegetarian restaurant, Vega, which tosses up scrumptious dishes despite being cooked without any trace of onion or garlic - quite a feat considering that these are two prime ingredients in Indian cookery. To sample an assortment of Vega's menu offerings order the 'thali deluxe'.
