Ridiculously opulent, the Four Seasons Chinzan-so manages to present a cohesive European-Japanese sense of design. With a location only slightly removed from the city centre, it feels like a luxurious suburban refuge.

The Four Seasons Chinzan-so was built on the grounds of an ornamental garden originally created by a prince during the Meiji Era. With such a pedigree, the hotel's demeanour is very self-aware - and effectively so. Large windows make the most of the city or garden views (with such a magnificent garden, it would be travesty not to opt for that view). And the interior is unquestionably civilised, yet oddly organic in tone: antique wooden tansu (Japanese cabinets) stand alongside ornate overstuffed rococo chairs with natural flair. Rooms feel equally pulled-together, and not so overly arranged as to feel sterile. In fact, the interior is well-suited to the garden outside - refined, but with a wild side. Joyfully ornamental and the height of comfort, this Four Seasons is wondrously easy escape from Tokyo's urban madness.
