Just a few blocks from Akihabara, this clean business hotel is the one of the nicest in Kanda. Even the wooden-trellised entry path to reception welcomes you in before the friendly staff do. Rooms are comfortable and spotless, and the neighbourhood is quiet for a good night's sleep.Though this Kanda hotel is 30 years old, it underwent a thorough, thoughtful renovation in the spring of 2005. A winding pathway bordered with bamboo, reeds and stones leads the way to reception, and the place is attentively designed for what is essentially a business hotel. Interiors are done up in warmly neutral colours and varnished woods; sliding window shades are reminiscent of shoji screens of traditional Japanese rooms. Subtle details like these give this hotel a warmer feel than typical business hotels and set it apart from its peers. Some of the helpful staff speak English, but all will make the friendly effort to communicate. It's a great, quiet neighbourhood that's conveniently placed within short walking distance to several subway lines as well as the JR lines. And its visual appeal makes it a lovely break from the monotonous concrete jungle.

Kanda, though not the trendiest of neighbourhoods, hides a few excellent traditional-style restaurants. Kanda Yabu Soba (2-10 Kanda-Awajicho, Chiyoda-ku) is the place to lunch on a hot day - order cold soba (thin buckwheat noodles) with dipping sauce on the side. Or try the famous Botan for a tatami-floored dinner of shabu-shabu (table-top cooking).
