The enormous 1552-room New Otani is renowned for the marvellous 400-year-old Japanese garden it surrounds. Loaded with upscale restaurants, boutiques and gift shops, this august establishment also has its own art museum in addition to the impressive 10 acres of green space.

There's most definitely a whiff of pretension about the New Otani, but it's somewhat justified, due to its attention to the details despite its gargantuan size. Elements of design such as paper shoji (translucent screens) over the windows and parquet floors in bathrooms help to create a classic atmosphere, while modern conveniences such as remote-controlled curtains do away with the bother of such quotidian chores. The activity throughout this imposing hotel reflects that on the streets of Akasaka and Nagatacho down below: a constant buzz of business deals, insider gossip, and upper-crust shopping and lunching. There's nothing garden-variety about the dining you can do in the restaurants of the immaculately manicured Japanese garden, and with its own art collection in-house, you don't have to stray very far to find some cultural enrichment amid all the commercial bustle.
