Bright, with clean lines and warm, attractive interiors, the latest iteration of the Marunouchi Hotel combines its sleek modern looks with traditional Japanese style. The hotel is just across the road from Tokyo station, and provides cool comfort in the city centre.

Housed in a brand-new building completed in late 2004 (though a Marunouchi Hotel has been here since 1924), this hotel deftly synthesises slick, modern conveniences with updated Japanese style. Paper shoji windows and gorgeous inlaid wood furnishings accent the simple and elegant rooms. All surfaces seem smooth and soothing, from the circular centre atrium to the lobby chairs facing a green garden space outside. Security measures include elevators that go to the guest room floors only for those bearing room keys. Small details like retro-style alarm clocks, loungy chairs and semi-double beds in the singles welcome the weary guest. Cool marble bathroom countertops echo the curvy interiors elsewhere in this subtly sensuous structure. The rooms are spacious, the restaurants stylish and the staff professional and courteous. Altogether a classy spot with a subdued Japanese tone.
