The YMCA label has an institutional character, but this Chiang Mai branch redeems itself with a location in a charming neighbourhood and some of the cheapest views of Doi Suthep in town.

Don't lose heart when you happen upon the ugly concrete block that will be your home away from home. The six-storey hotel is nearly characterless, except for the friendly and accommodating staff and the constant bustle of the related YMCA offices and activity rooms. There are 79 hotel-style rooms (smoking and nonsmoking) that are well maintained but boring. The standard rooms are the show-stealers, with a full-frontal view of Doi Suthep. Skip the dorm beds as they're no bargain compared to elsewhere in the city. But do congratulate yourself for finding a private room and a pool. In the lobby, there's free wi-fi, a handicraft shop and a 24-hour massage centre. Income generated from the hotel supports the YMCA's rural development programmes.
