Lonely Planet review

Settling into an over-stuffed armchair, surrounded by antiques and the heads of beasts long-since hunted in far-off lands, it would be easy to think you'd fallen through a sinkhole in Bangkok and landed in an explorer's lounge. That, it seems, is exactly the point of this small boutique hotel.Built in a late-19th century colonial style, The Eugenia is a homage to decadent old-world comforts. It was designed, built and is operated by Eugene Yu-Cheng Yeh, a designer and traveller described as a 'Taiwanese Indiana Jones'. Much of the furniture and antiques are part of his private collection, gathered primarily from colonial Indochina, Burma and India. As well as exotic, the overall feel is intimate, with only 12 rooms and refined individual service. The rooms come in four types, most with four-poster beds, antique desks and hand-beaten bathtubs of copper or aluminium. However, they're not huge - sizes range from an adequate 42 sq m down to a compact 22 sq m. The restaurant serves a highly regarded mix of international cuisine. The backyard pool is more plunge than lap, and the location is quiet but a long walk or taxi to most sights.
