An elegant top-end hotel popular with Swedes and the diplomatic corps. There's something very Bangkok about the presence of this venerable establishment poised stoically beside the seething sin-for-sale of Patpong. It has a conservative elegance befitting its bureaucratic clientele.

The extensive lobby says it all: marbled surfaces and subdued gold edges, with devoted staff gliding around in Thai-silk uniforms reminiscent of the national airline. Think 'high-ranked government official' as opposed to 'flashy high-roller'. The rooms are unimaginative but plush, with inviting white beds and thick carpets. The decor soothes the diplomatic palate with pale wood, discreet lighting and mirrors, punctuated with warm touches of teak and silk. There is a commitment to the classic Thai style, with quality fabrics and prints. The Montien also prides itself on its business facilities and each room has high-speed internet access. The building also houses various restaurants and a large turquoise swimming pool. Bear in mind when you reserve that one side has temple views over nearby Wat Hualampong, while the other looks out over blazing Patpong.
