Travellers rave about Shahi Palace Hotel, and two-day stays often stretch out to double that or more. This beautiful place is indeed worthy of the praise chorus: it boasts wonderful rooms, stellar conviviality, polished ambience and unerring hospitality. Its building was crafted in traditional haveli style, and the sandstone walls are harmonious with Jaisalmer's dramatic desert environs. Beautifully decorated, the hotel's varying rooms, some of which are quite small, offer lovely touches such as carved stone beds and window seats. For the budget-minded, the homely four-bed dorm room is a good option. There's nothing institutionally YMCA about it, but the dorm's downside is its basement location, meaning you're literally in the dark when electricity cuts out across town mid-morning. It's quite likely you'll be spending much of your time on the roof, with its wicker chairs, cushioned seats in wide alcoves and romantic views of the grand fort not too far off. Call ahead for free pickup from the bus or rail station.
