Functionality with personality defines this choice on an unruffled stretch close, but not too close, to the bustle of town. The hotel's effusive and conscientious management will ensure your stay is comfortable and - unlike some of Jaisalmer's hotels that double as safari showrooms - hassle-free.

The light blue hallway walls lead to cosy (read: on the small side) mint-green-painted rooms with spotless white sheets. All rooms have petite balconies, the south-facing rooms have a decent view of the fort. Thin maroon carpeting protects against winter's cold floors. Relics and artefacts here and there add a subtle traditional touch, while the TV and phone found in every room offer a link to the outside world (if you want it). A rooftop restaurant with pretty potted plants serves Indian, Chinese and Continental. A small upper tier shooting off from here is an outstanding front-row spot at sunset for a fort view. All in all, Hotel Jaisal Palace is a pretty straightforward choice - there are no surprises here, good or bad, but that may be just the prescription for a good night's sleep.
