This modern place, with a dramatic stone-carved exterior, is a stunner - perfect for some well-deserved time out. You can view Jaisalmer Fort in some of the rooms, but that's almost inconsequential because you have your own mite of majesty right here.Fort Rajwada was designed in accordance with Vaastu, an ancient Indian art of design that creates spaces with a harmonious, balanced rhythm and order. The intricately crafted lobby, created by an opera set designer, holds balconies from 250-year-old havelis along with a grand chhatri (canopy). The rooms in the main building are minimally elegant and comfortable, with marble floors and the usual mod cons, plus electric kettle, small fridge and minibar. Sealed windows keep out desert dust and winter chill, but the place is well ventilated. Still, you might feel cosier in a room in the rear complex, particularly one surrounding the large, lovely pool. These are a tad smaller than the main building's rooms, but they have light wooden furnishings and good natural light. Want to splurge a bit? You can't go wrong with the suites - they're gorgeous.

If you can pull yourself away from the pool, Keralan Ayurvedic massage therapists, the billiard room, and six lovely acres of Fort Rajwada, there is plenty to see and do on the outside (though not much within walking distance). The hotel arranges camel and jeep safaris and local sightseeing. Venturing on your own is easy as pie: Town with its sites and facilities is 3.5km (2.2mi) away.
Sir Paul McCartney slept here - and apparently was pleased.
