Although the drab exterior is less than dazzling, the Golden Dragon rises above first impressions. Located close to the train station, this is a popular choice with tour groups and families. Amenities include satellite TV, complimentary breakfast, an executive non-smoking floor, and outdoor tennis courts and pool. Online discounts cut rates by 50%.

This hotel reached its peak in the 1990s, when it was the de facto choice for various foreign political figures visiting Kunmíng. If more modern constructions have since overshadowed it, long experience with international guests has helped the management instil a friendly, service-oriented attitude in their employees. The front desk staff, decked out in purple and gold brocade, have a decent command of English and are particularly helpful. The rooms are unimpressive (particularly the archaic bathrooms), but comfortable enough for most travellers.
