This hotel dating back two (or maybe even three) centuries and opposite the delightful place du Marché Ste-Catherine has been decorated according (or so say their brochure and website) to the 'Vieux Paris Art' style. The result is almost too much, with exposed beams, gilt frames, half-timbered or stone walls. The 23 guestrooms are comfortable enough - lots of vertical stripes on the walls and the bedspreads - but be aware that they are dispersed over six floors and there is no lift. Some rooms face the pretty square while others look into a back (and slightly quieter) courtyard. There are also rooms reserved for nonsmokers. We especially like the carpeted old staircase leading to the upper levels that could be from an Addams Family film set.

Just over the road is the fromagerie G Millet (77 Rue St-Antoine, 4e), one of the better cheesemongers in the Marais.
The Marais, the area of the Right Bank directly north of Île St-Louis, was exactly what its name implies - a 'marsh' or 'swamp' - until the 13th-century, when it was drained and put to agricultural use.
