This 54-room hotel is owned by the same family that runs the cosy Familia Hôtel next door but, boasting an additional star, it offers just that much more comfort. Mind you, the service remains excellent in both. The hotel's reception area is kitted out in Oriental carpets and antique books, which the affable owner/manager Erich Gaucheron collects, and some of the rooms have been enlarged. We like the frescoes of French monuments, the reproduction 18th-century wallpaper and the lovely oak overlays on the doors. Some 10 rooms have small balconies, eight with views of Notre Dame, and two have tiny courtyards that are swooningly romantic. The almost obsessive attention to detail is legendary here, ranging from the custom-made radiator cover that blends right in with the 18th-century interiors to the coffee machine that grinds the beans fresh for each cup. The hotel is air-conditioned throughout.

The Institute du Monde Arabe (1 rue des Fossés St-Bernard, 5e), established to promote cultural contact between the Arab and European worlds, is housed in a stunning building 350m (380 yards) to the northeast and includes a fascinating museum.
The 5e arrondissement has been the centre of Parisian higher education since the Middle Ages and was named the Latin Quarter (Quartier Latin) because students and professors communicated exclusively in that language here until the Revolution.
