Address: 1 place de la sorbonne , Paris 75005, France Show on map
In the thick of the Sorbonne area, the Select is an Art Deco mini-palace, with an atrium and cactus-strewn winter garden, an 18th-century vaulted breakfast room and 67 stylish guestrooms. The rooms are not particularly large, but the design solutions are ingenious - modern baths in an open plan behind the sleeping area, a cupboard where you would least expect it, and a flat plasma TV screen to save the odd centimetre of space. Some rooms look into a quiet but dark courtyard; choose instead those that give on to the leafy place de la Sorbonne which (usually) quietens down after dark. The wonderful 1920s-style cocktail bar with an attached library just off the lobby is a delight. Rooms are air-conditioned thoughout.

When the weather is warm, Parisians of all ages flock to the formal terraces and chestnut groves of the 23 hectare (57 acre) Luxembourg Garden just across the street to read, relax and sunbathe. Here you'll also find the Musée du Luxembourg in the old orangery of the Palais du Luxembourg, which now hosts very prestigious temporary art exhibitions.
Chapelle de la Sorbonne, the university's gold-domed church built between 1635 and 1642, at the top of the square, is the final resting place of Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642), Louis XIII's enlightened but ruthless chief minister.
