This 31-room hotel helped set what has almost become a standard of the Parisian accommodation scene: small, minimalist, discreet. The hotel's fabrics, lighting and soft furnishings are all of the utmost quality and taste. It's the little things, as they say, and who can forget - or miss for that matter - their room number inscribed in light on the floor in front of the threshold? Rooms are refreshingly modern but subtly designed, with a preference for chocolate browns, burgundies and purples. Bathrooms are small but shimmering, with polished chrome basins and mirrors and opaque glass sinks. The public areas are hardly less stylish; the lobby is large and bright and the bar just off it is a favoured neighbourhood gathering spot. La Villa has air-con throughout and there's one room adapted for wheelchair access.

The Art Deco Café de Flore (172 blvd St-Germain, 6e), a few minutes' walk from the hotel, hasn't changed much since the days when Sartre, de Beauvoir, Camus and Picasso bent their elbows and wagged their chins here.
