Favoured by a mixed fashion and gay set, Axel occupies a sleek, refurbished corner block and offers modern touches in its designer rooms. Declaring itself openly to be heterofriendly, this stylish hotel is nicely positioned within a few blocks of the old town.

Behind the wrought-iron balconies and stained-glass windows of the corner galleries of this fine building lurk cool designer rooms. Plasma-screen TVs, a light colour scheme and (in the double rooms) king-sized beds are just some of the pluses. The superior rooms are especially spacious. After a morning's shopping run in the nearby streets of L'Eixample, a dip in the rooftop pool might be in order. At the end of the day, the Finnish sauna and spa bath also beckon. The rooftop skybar is open for chillin' and cocktails from May to September.
