Lonely Planet review

Run by the same owners as two other fine hotels - the Astoria and the Claris - this is a well-located quality option that probably deserves an extra star. Decor varies greatly from one room to another, but they're all classy and comfortable. The Hotel Balmes experience begins in the lobby and public passageways, where stunning African masks and statuettes and original Catalan artwork mark it out as a place of individual style. Rooms are stylish, replete with those light and dark contrasts that work so well. If you're here during low season (generally high summer and deepest, darkest winter), the prices may just be the best in town. The rooms are also spacious; some of those on the ground floor are split-level and come with a private terrace. Hanging gardens cascade into the pleasant internal courtyard and pool area, where there's also a bar. Another highlight is the service, which is attentive when you need it to be and discreet at other times. Located in a residential and shopping area, you're a short walk or one stop away from the old town by train.
