Stylishly carved out of a historic Barri Gòtic building, this hotel's 37 rooms have dark wood beams, parquet floors, colourful mosaic-tiled bathrooms and are fully soundproofed. The aesthetic in the rooms is modern: light colours blended with navy blues blankets and the occasional art print. The location is terrific.

They pride themselves on their service here and the list of added extras in every room is impressive - televisions with digital channels, free wi-fi and high-speed internet connections, well-stocked minibars, safes and all the bathroom accessories you could want (and, if you include the bathroom scales, some you may not want after eating your way around Barcelona). The buffet breakfast is one of the best of its kind in town and you can sample it at pleasant tables in the interior patio. The building's elegant facade is also another example of what Barcelona hotels do so well - combining heritage charm with tastefully renovated interiors. The surrounding streets are some of the Barri Gòtic's most attractive.
