This is the newer and slightly more upmarket version from the people who brought you the Hostal Gat Raval. The concept is the same - lime greens, sleek lines and illuminated photos of Barcelona's alternative side - but the 34 rooms are larger and come with a few extras. There's air-con and heating in every room, not to mention TVs and bathrooms that are bright and cheerful. There's also a 5th floor room on the roof that opens out onto a large terrace with good views over the rooftops and out to Montjuïc. The whole place is supermodern and supercool. The breakfast room is awash with funky polka dots and curvy chairs, while the open-air equivalent has furniture that would be equally at home in a Japanese garden. Staff are savvy and as hip as the rooms they oversee, not to mention friendly and knowledgeable about their city. If you've become a believer in the Gat concept, there's even an array of products (including T-shirts) on sale to help you spread the message. It all adds up to be one of the more original sleeping choices in Barcelona.

You could head straight down Carrer de l'Hospital and leave El Raval behind for La Rambla, but this is an area with more charms than first appears. A mainstay of the quirky cultural life of the barri is Teatre Llantiol (Carrer de la Riereta 7), where one night you'll find an acoustic concert, the next day, a magic show. Artists' studios abound in the surrounding streets.
