The area south of the Alameda is awash in mid-priced hotels that are generally reliable if unremarkable options. The Marlowe, just across the way from Chinatown's Pagoda gate, is the cream of the crop because it covers all the essentials: comfort, space, aesthetics and friendliness.Though all the hotels in the zone seem cut from the same cloth, the Marlowe is the best designed and maintained. That's apparent from the moment you enter the spacious, well-lit lobby, decorated with Puebla pottery and Metepec ceramics. Staff may seem phlegmatic at first, but once you've checked in you'll find them to be an efficient, responsive crew. Rooms are easy to settle into, with quality carpet and colorful bedspreads that nicely complement the salmon and champagne walls. Even the abstract art is a cut above the usual kitsch. Laptop users will appreciate that all nine floors are wireless, and fitness freaks will like the top-floor gym, where you can spin away the afternoon looking over the spires of downtown Mexico City or sweat it out in the sauna.
