Inside, this three-star hotel is comfortable if unremarkable. However, just step outside the main entrance and you are standing in Piazza Santissima Annunziata, the most serene and arguably the loveliest of Florence's smaller piazzas. While the square is dominated by the work of Brunelleschi, the hotel itself occupies an undistinguished, though charming, neo-Renaissance building that dates from the late 19th-century; its burnt-orange walls make it reminiscent of Rome rather than Florence. The hotel's owners seem to have concentrated more on efficiency than charm, and everything above the ground floor has been gutted and then fitted out to look like a chain hotel. Still, rooms are comfortable, prices are reasonable by Florence standards, and if you're lucky you'll get one of the rooms looking on the square.

Step outside your hotel and behold the adjacent Spedale degli Innocenti. Designed by Brunelleschi and decorated with terracotta sculpture by della Robbia, it is one of the masterworks of the early Renaissance and influenced Italian architects for generations.
