Address: Via strozzi 2 , Florence 50123, Italy Show on map
Located on the fourth floor of a late-19th-century building just past the grand arch that presides over Piazza della Repubblica, this classic Florence pension has been offering solid, mid-range comforts since 1879.The building was part of a newly unified Italy's efforts to do away with 'ancient squalor,' as the inscription on the arch reads. That meant flattening medieval streets to make way for a rather bloated, 19th-century version of classicism. The once-grand entrance has seen better days, but once you ride the cage elevator to the fourth floor, you will be relieved to find that this place is very well maintained, if not exactly deluxe. Think framed Botticelli posters and faux-wood floors. Still, this place can make your stay in Florence plenty comfortable thanks to great beds with fine sheets, modern bathrooms with plenty of hot water, an imminently convenient location, and a filling buffet breakfast to get you out the door in the morning.

Just down the street from the hotel is the Palazzo Strozzi, both the largest and most beautiful of the city's Renaissance palazzi. Its remarkable, rusticated pietra forte facade manages to be at once colossal and harmonious.
