Located within a lovely, 16th-century palazzo steps from the San Lorenzo market, this hotel offers convenience as well as solid, three-star comforts. It's not exactly a bargain, but it's decent value in this precious market.

The hotel's exterior is its finest feature. Classic Tuscan touches include arched windows, honey-coloured stucco, and a top-floor terrace sheltered by a roof of carved wood. Inside, the reception area sits under an elegantly vaulted ceiling covered in antique frescoes. Upstairs, however, the old palazzo has been largely gutted and divided up to make way for more or less impersonal guestrooms. So if you decide to stay here and are looking for historical charms, you'll have to walk outside and admire the facade.  That said, the ceilings of the top-floor rooms have a charming slope to them. Modernity does provide increased comfort, including new, fully-equipped bathrooms and soundproof windows. Still, if you're after R&R, it's still best to ask for an internal room. Prices include free Internet access and buffet breakfast; good discounts are possible in low season.
