Perched on the banks of the Arno just down from the Ponte Vecchio, this remarkable hotel manages to be at once cheerfully casual and brightly sumptuous. However, it is the views of the river and the city's warm-toned facades that make this place stand out.

The hotel encompasses a 12th-century tower, which has a number of deluxe rooms for lovers of the Middle Ages who also require high thread-count sheets. However, the real treat here lies in the new wing, where the majority of the rooms have stunning vistas of the Arno. Perhaps inspired by the river itself, designers have done up the ground floor in a cheerfully nautical combination of white and navy, making this compact, low-slung space feel more like a yacht than a lobby. There is also a tiny, but delightful, terrace right on the river. But it is the art on the walls that really impresses, including an etching by Picasso and a lovely series of drawings by Jean Cocteau. Likewise, every room boasts a successful combination of antiques and original, 20th-century art of rather considerable value.
