In a city of views, few can match those from the Hotel Forum's roof-garden restaurant, stretching from the Vittoriano on the right down to the Forums and the Colosseum on the left. A former convent, this elegant four-star offers a formal welcome, old-fashioned comfort and efficient service.

This is the ideal choice for armchair sightseers. All you've got to do is climb to the rooftop American bar, admire the view and you can tick most of ancient Rome off your list. But if the view inspires you to action, the Forums, Colosseum, Palatine and Piazza Venezia are all within 15 minutes' walk. A stately old pile, the Forum wears an unapologetically old-world look with antiques, leather armchairs and chandeliers strewn about the wood-panelled lobby. Formal staff, decked out in ties and tails, complete the picture. Upstairs, the rooms continue the theme with parquet floors, heavy fabrics and velvet bedsteads. Mod cons, including satellite TV and free wi-fi, are incorporated with discretion.
