Rising from the city's main train station, and connected to the underground shopping city, the great thing about the Fairmont is that on a cold frostbite-inducing day - or just another winter day in Montreal - you won't need to step foot outside.

Beatles fans will know that after being denied entry to the USA in June 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono holed up in room 1742 and staged their famous bed-in. But Le Reine Elizabeth has always enjoyed tremendous popularity, with visits from a long list of dignitaries including most of the British Royal family, Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama and Mikhail Gorbachev. All 1039 rooms, including 14 wheelchair-accessible rooms and 100 suites, have air-con, voicemail, play stations, cable TV and more on request. Standard rooms are on the small side, and only 60% have been renovated in recent years, but you can be assured of cleanliness and skyline views. Fitness facilities include an indoor pool and sauna, and business services in the lower lobby offer fax, high-speed Internet access, cellular phone rentals and secretarial services. Staff are friendly and efficient.
