Open the door to this elegant European-style hotel, cloaked in a dark, Victorian parlour atmosphere, and see brassy antiques blend with oak panelling. Rooms are smallish, but an excellent deal considering the high-quality service, great location and reasonable prices.
In a cosy dining room with stoney grey walls and flowery Victorian garden furniture, breakfast is a pleasure. The spread includes cheeses, meats, croissants and the chef Sylvie's amazing fruit salad. There's even a terrasse fronting St Denis if you prefer a little eyeball action with your morning meal. The French ambiance of the surrounding Quartier Latin pervades the guest rooms. There are wooden or wrought-iron bedframes, flowery wallpaper and in the suites, Jacuzzi and living rooms. Rooms on the courtyard are quiet, and those overlooking St Denis have double-glazing to block out most of the street noise. The guestbook is always full of rave reviews and the staff are notably efficient and friendly.
