Despite the rising skyline, the Hotel Vancouver remains a city landmark recognisable by its gabled, green copper roof. One of the most famous hotels in Vancouver, if not Canada, it offers all the comforts known to the modern hospitality industry, including an excellent fitness facility and indoor pool.

This sparkling grand dame of Vancouver hotels was one of the original chateau-like properties strung like pearls along Canada's national rail network. Despite the snooty provenance, the hotel is now one of the city's most comfortable luxury options - just ask the dog that sits next to the concierge desk: he's available to go walkabout with guests missing their at-home pooches. Befitting its history, the interiors - including a sweeping lobby area complete with a bar where you can take your afternoon tea - are swanky and luxurious, especially if you like deep carpets, golden chandeliers and plenty of marble. The rooms vary considerably in size and quality. If you have the budget, check in to the Gold Floor for a raft of extra services and don't forget to visit Griffins for its decadent seafood-dominated dinner buffet.
